Dr Nyirenda is Strategic Partnerships & Capacity Development Manager and Head of Africa Office of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnerships (EDCTP). He is a public health physician and research scientist with 28 years of experience in Clinical Medicine, Public Health, and Clinical Research across sub-Saharan Africa.
He trained in Medicine at University of St Andrews (Scotland), St Mary’s Hospital (London), and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in Malawi. His Public Health training was completed at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Before joining EDCTP in 2004, he held various positions, including District Health Officer, Tuberculosis National Research Officer, and Medical Officer at the World Health Organization (WHO).
His work has significantly contributed to TB control, operational research programs, and academic teaching. He has held honorary lectureships at KUHeS, University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), and University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). He also plays a key role in several global health initiatives, including the African CDC Task Force on COVID-19, the Global COVID-19 Coalition, and the WHO Advisory Group on Clinical Trials Coordination.
As a founding director of Clinical Research Education and Management Services in Malawi, Dr. Nyirenda has widely published research on infectious diseases, clinical trials, and public health strategies.
